This is kind of a big deal, people. Facebook will soon offer " Real Gifts " that friends can give each other. Sure, you'll never have an excuse to miss a birthday again, but the implications are bigger than that.

Consider:

  • Retail partners have already lined up for the holiday season: Rdio, babyGap, Brookstone, Hulu Plus, Lindt, ProFlowers, Random House, Dean & Deluca and more.
  • This places Facebook in direct competition with every other online commerce aggregator in the world. How will Amazon and eBay take this—integration or walled-garden? (We probably know how Apple will handle it...)
  • This could very well be the boost that the ailing social media giant needs: with the world's social graph well in-hand, this is the most obvious way to monetize those connections. Rather than create content for monetization, you simply create the distribution framework. Once again, the killer app here is people's relationships.
  • Plus: it's mobile, baby!

But calling these gifts "meaningful"? Hardly. How thoughtful is a click, really?
