The convergence of industrial design advances, FDA court rulings, and the Internet is leading to a new market where self-service shopping is replacing what was formerly limited to the domain of the professional elite. Sure, you still need a prescription or an audiogram from a real professional, but the vast majority of people with average needs now have the power to control their sensory-augmentation experience.
What is interesting here is not necessarily the fact that you can go shopping for glasses and hearing aids online, but that the desires of consumers is actually starting to impact arcane legislation and policy.
