The trend is gaining momentum: More and more scientists are crowdsourcing the power of play and games for scientific purpose.

Earlier this year, Foldit made headlines by enabling gamers to contribute to important scientific research. By crowdsourcing the puzzle of protein folding to players around the world, the game demonstrated the power of games as a valid scientific research tool. In fact, they discovered that players are finding novel solutions far more quickly than with previous approaches.

Now a new online game, EteRNA, exploits people's competitive nature to help scientists figure out how RNA works. "Winners" are periodically chosen from the robust community of players to have their virtual RNA designs synthesized in a lab.

And the game is actually kind of fun. Be sure to try it out.
