Are you Facebook friends with your neighbour? Here's an interesting Wired article on the rise of "neighbourhood social networks" like Topix and Nextdoor.
While the prediction that social media will splinter into smaller and smaller affinity-group-like clusters is not new, what is new here is the notion that goal-oriented groups of "non-friends" will rise up to effect real change at a very local level. And here, like with the Arab Spring , technology will not create the change but will rather be the catalyst, or framework, for enabling ad-hoc organization resulting in quick action.
This hyper-local networking is something to keep an eye on as it develops.
