Computer scientists at the University of Rochester, New York, are developing an app for deaf people that could deliver subtitles for live events. By building smartly on some existing technology and services—most notably Amazon's Mechanical Turk—the service claims they can deliver a near-real-time audio transcription with a 74% or better accuracy rating using some smart Multiple Sequence Alignment algorithms.
The user just keeps their smartphone on and within earshot. The magic of computer science, the cloud, and crowdsourcing does the rest.
And it's not just the deaf that could benefit. Could this be the future of meeting minutes? Espionage? Notes to self? Live-tweeting? Post-modern performance street art? The possibilities truly excite us.
